Chapter 5

“I’LL HAVE FRIED CATFISH, coleslaw, fries, and a root beer,” Gary told me when we entered the café.

It was packed, but no one squawked at his presence, and I took it as a good sign. I was disappointed to see the only open places to sit were in the middle of the dining room. My preference was a seat near the back wall, but at least we weren’t directly in front of a window, which always made me feel vulnerable.

Ally smiled at me when she saw Uncle Gary, and I rolled my eyes before continuing my scrutiny of the other diners. Most of them were locals, but there were a few I didn’t recognize. My gaze swept past the table of giggling teenage girls and came to rest on the two men sitting at my usual table. Before I could size them up, Gary kicked me and I looked to see what he wanted.

“It’s that Commie!” he nearly shouted. A hush fell over the café, and I flashed my teeth at the diners and tried to take his hand. He jerked it away and gave me a dirty look. Thankfully, someone mumbled Cuckoo and things returned to normal.

“You can’t say things like that,” I warned Gary in a low voice, trying to keep my temper in check when I saw two unfamiliar women at the next table shamelessly eavesdropping.

“But it’s true!” he insisted.

“Uncle Gary.” I waited until I had his undivided attention and tried to reason with him. “We need to keep it between us. Okay?” The warning note in my voice reached him.

“You’re right. If she knows that we know that she’s pretending to be someone she’s not—” His eyes shifted sideways when one of the women next to us got up to use the restroom. “Oh, dear. That poor lady.”

She looked like the majority of women in the diner—over 60 and overweight. But I didn’t see anything that might cause his obvious dismay.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

Instead of replying, he covered his eyes with his hands. I was about to repeat my question when he erupted from his chair, tipping it over, and followed her. She wasn’t quite to the bathroom door when he caught up with her. I was on his heels, but not in time to prevent him from stretching out his hand.

God, no! Tell me he didn’t just tug on the seat of her polyester slacks.

Her scream of outrage tore through the café, and she whirled to face him. The diner grew silent as the drama played out.

“Are you getting personal?” she demanded with a red face.

Gary shook his head like a wet dog, and his eyes were wide. “Oh, no, ma’am! I’d never get handsy with a lady in public.”

Her fists went to her hips. “Oh, yeah? Well, exactly what were you doing then?”

“I was trying to help.” He appeared confused and frightened by her response and I feared she might deck him, so I stepped forward and took his arm.

“I’m sorry if my uncle offended you,” I said quickly.
